Narcotic Monitoring System
The Narcotic Monitoring System (NMS) is a database where narcotic and controlled drug dispensing information is transmitted and monitored by the Government of Ontario. In order to process any narcotic or controlled drugs, specific patient and doctor information must be entered in Nexxsys.

A patient's Heatlh Card number must be entered in two places of the Patient Folder:
- The Main tab > PHN field.
- The 3rd Party tab > Identity Code dropdown and PHN/Identity # field.
Note: Other forms of identification are also accepted including Driver's License or Passport. In the 3rd Party tab, select the applicable identification from the Identity Code dropdown and enter the corresponding identification number in the PHN/Identity # field.

The appropriate Prescriber Type and the prescriber's License Number must be entered in the Doctor Folder.
Additional details about NMS claims:
- NMS claims process in the background with a billing code of NM.
- NMS is the last claim processed, after Cash.
- The Outstanding Transactions Report can be printed from Nexxsys Reports and lists Rx#’s that need to be resubmitted.
Resubmitting NMS Transactions
When a prescription for a narcotic or controlled medication is filled and sent to NMS, the transaction can fail or be rejected. Any issues must be fixed before resubmitting the transactions. It is crucial that NMS transactions be completed.
If there is an error when submitting a claim to NMS, it will appear in the 3rd Party tab.
To resolve any errors:
- Review the response messages and take the necessary corrective action.
- Select Submit.
